Torino
2006 - What a great Olympics. The USA came into the Olympics
off
34 medal performance, and with more medal events it would
have
been easily possible for the US to hit 30. We had Hannah
Kearney
from the US Ski team on the show, to gear up for Torino 2006, but as it
turned out the US missed out went it came to the marquee events. 25
medals is still a solid showing, but you
can hack about 8 snowboard medals off, then you're only left with gold
in speed
skating & two skiing events. Here
are my thoughts on the 10 stories from Torino 2006.
10.
US Hockey teams fail
- The US women were thinking gold…and lost in an
upset having to settle
for bronze. The men looked poor as they fail to finish ago
the top teams.
9.
Joey
Cheek wins Gold & Silver – Joey Cheek wins the gold
in 500m & the Silver
in 1000m then he donates his winnings to charity.
8.
Cohen Falls
to
Silver – Sasha Cohen had gold with in her
grasp…after the short program…but
falls twice and ends up the silver medal.
7. Ohno
Wins
Gold – Short track star Apolo Anto Ohno wins gold in the 500m
the final night
of the Olympics, he also won bronze in the team relay.

6.
Julia Mancuso 21 years
old, won the gold medal in the giant salom. Ted Ligety won
the gold medal
in the men's combined, he is only 21 too. Both medal were the
only ones
the US
ski team brought home.
5.
Bode Miller & Lindsay
Jacobellis view Olympics....as "whatever" Both pulled the
famous me first routine...and Miller goes 0-5. Millar in 2010
should
represent his RV and Jacobellis the state of California
because the US
should at least have athletes who care about country.
4. Shani Davis
of the United States,
wins the 1000m
meters in speedskating, then followed that with silver in 1500m.
Although
his teammate Chad Hedrick complain about Davis
not competing the team pursuit. Davis
leaves as one of the stars for the US.
3. Enrico Fabris wins two golds in speedskating for the host country.
Fabris, upset Davis & Hedrick to win the speedskating
marquee race
the 1500m. He also won gold in the team event, Italy
first in speedskating.
2. Cindy Klassen of Canada
wins 5 medals, easily the most of any athlete at Torino.
Klassen also sets a Canadian record with 5. One gold, two
silver &
two bronze medals.
1.
The Italian cross country 4x10km relay team wins gold in the
greatest
race ever skied on Italian snow. Italy
now as either won gold or
silver in the last five Olympic 4x10k relays. The build up to this race
started
in Norway
in 1996, even NBC did a show about the Italian Norwegian rivalry.
However
Norway Failed to finish in the medals as, Pietro Piller
Cottrer, Cristian Zorzi, Fulvio Valbusa,
and Giorgio di Centa of Italy
won the gold. A white night in Italy
means party night, and that night it snowed in downtown Turin,
a rarity as the Italians got their medals.
