Ellis Cannon is out at 104.7
Pittsburgh Sports Talker Ellis Cannon is out at FM station 104.7. Cannon’s show aired weeknights 6-8, and has been on the air since 2003. The move leaves the Pirates as the only sports talk programing on the station. Cannon certainly has ties to ESPN, so he could end up there. He also is involved with the Pittsburgh Sports Report, the Report is working on a similar publication in North Carolina, so a move out of the area wouldn’t surprise me either.
The Pittsburgh Sports world is also eagerly awaiting word from Rocco DeMaro, now the only sports voice on the station. He has yet to tweet about the situation – @RoccoDeMaro
On a side note, it’s very hard to get station ratings. It’s hard to get any concrete data on how many listeners or the ratings on the local talk shows.
Feel Free to post your thoughts…

I am seriously bummed out that E is out at 104… I enjoyed his show, and listened almost daily. Good Luck to him, and I hope he remains local, for the regions sake…. He is very bright, and delivered a good show, he will be missed.
Before moving to Pittsburgh, whenever I heard a sports talk show I would change the station. After hearing Ellis, I realized he was something different. He is the only radio sports talk show I can listen to.
Likewise I hope he uses this as a stepping stone to much better things.
I am very dissapointed that Ellis Cannon will no longer be on 104.7. Anytime I was near a radio from 6-8 pm I would listen. He was not only entertaining, but extemely knowledgeable and insightful. I really hope he lands on another Pittsburgh station. I think Clear Channel made a mistake on this one. I for one will not be tuning in from 6-8 on their station any longer!
Best of luck E – on to bigger and better things!
This is a major blow to sports talk radio in Western PA. Ellis is always well prepared, and together with Digby runs a very fast moving, informative and entertaining show. It added to the appeal that it was delivered over a clear FM station. He also draws callers who are generally a cut above the standard fare, and if not, then he has a way of picking them up. Come to think of it, I’ve been a long time listener, and I can’t recall Ellis ever bickering with a caller. That’s refreshingly different. I would like to know how his show rated… it certainly rated well with me, and I hope he returns to the FM dial in Pittsburgh.
Planet E has left the Galaxy. I hope advertisers will drop 104.7 FM. Maybe it’ll go back to a smooth jazz station like it was in the 90′s! Ellis c u soon on ESPN.
Definitely a shame, my husband & I really enjoyed E’s show. I could never listen to sports talk programs (being really just a hockey & horse racing fan), but always turned Cannon on in the evenings. As someone from Detroit, home of the much-vaunted Mitch Albom, who has a radio program there that deals with sports quite a bit…Well, Ellis could slaughter Albom in the ratings any day he liked with both hands tied behind his back and no electricity, so far as talent goes.
We already miss his show, and wish him the best. Too bad.
Terrible news e has left 104.7. No one even seemed to know this was going to happen. E was a great host of the show and He will sorely be missed. To bad. Take care E. Hope he ends up somewhere local that i can still listen to him on the radio or tv.
Another Obama victim …….
I continue to be a listener of WPGB, but I emailed David Edgar (Clear Channel’s Pittsburgh Operations Manager) the day of the change to voice my displeasure, not only with the change itself, but also with the unceremonious manner in which it played out. As best as I have been able to determine, this was nothing more than an economic decision (there just seems to me to be at least a little more to the story). In my opinion, E deserved much better. I am hopeful that I will be hearing his unique style again very soon and I will be ready with my request for permission to come aboard.
Bad move.
Ellis Cannon was a great sports talk guy and a pleasure to hear during drive time. Ellis was the rare combination of entertainment and information in a light, generally non-politicized subject area. He was also a real Pittsburgh guy.
I’ll miss him and I’ll change the channel during my evening drive to prevent greater taffic problems on the Parkway.
I have never commented before on a news story or blog entry as I am now doing, but I cannot contain my disbelief. There was no radio show I enjoyed more than Ellis Cannon’s sports talk. When I came back from a week out of town and heard the bag of hot air broadcasting in his time slot I thought it some kind of anomaly. Now I know it is not and I am almost broken hearted. Were it not for Rush I would never listen to that station again. Ok, I will tune it to hear Rocco–unless they can him too.
are you kidding me????????????? please tell me that ellis cannon hasn’t been replaced with mike savage? That loser hasbeen dinosaur that couldn’t hold up any ratings…period! but second thought, E is such a class guy, and soooo intelligent and savvy, that was too much for Clear Channel. They would be better served with Sarah Palin the brain surgeon pontificating on the future sportsworld in Pittsburgh! What the heck was I thinking?!?!?
WHERE IS ELLIS GO?????????? ENJOYED LISTENING TO HIM. THAT JUST PLAIN SUCKS
