Pirates Miss out on Chapman

2010 January 10

pirates-logoThe Pirates once again missed an opportunity, as they failed to sign Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman. Truth be told the Pirates were never very interested in the first place. The 22 year old Chapman might be the most talented young pitcher to come along in 25 years. He signed with the Red for a reported $30m over 5 years, which could look like a bargain, should he come anywhere close to working out. The Pirates once again showed their commitment to losing, as they refused to spend any extra money on pitching. Even if everything works out, and their young hitter turn into All-Stars, they’ll still need a couple ace pitchers to compete. They don’t have them in their system and they can’t them afford in free agency. Remember even a middle of the rotation guy like Randy Wolf got 3 years $30 this offseason. If they were serious about winning they would have taken this chance.
