Pirates Ranking in Revenue

2009 December 9

pirateslogoblackMany of you heard agent Scott Boras accusing the Pirates making $70 million in annual profit. The Post Gazette as they do every so often, did a story on the Pirates’ finances. Full of sketchy details and even sketchier explanations, as the Bucs claim only $5.5m in annual profit. The known facts are income of $66m million from MLB’s central fund and revenue sharing. Plus $15m from local broadcast rights. Their player payroll along with draft bonuses and international expenses is $59m. I conservatively estimate they generate $50m from tickets, signage, and food at PNC Park. Since the Bucs won’t open their books to prove my math wrong, I say they’re +$70 before operating expenses. So unless Congress is running their operations or Bob Nutting’s salary is $50million, I say their making a whole lot more profit than they say

Here is the article I mention in the Pgh Post.
