Pirates Draft Catcher Sanchez

2009 June 9

pirates-logoJust a little FYI, the Pens game didn’t end until after my press time, so pick up a copy tomorrow for my take on that game. Yesterday the Pirates took, Tony Sanchez from Boston College, most scouts are saying this is a bit of a stretch. Perplexing enough the Pirates already have three major catchers, the injured Ryan Doumit (28), Jason Jaramillo (26), and Robinzon Diaz (25). To be honest Jaramillo and Diaz look like they make an above average catching tandem. Sanchez, is certainly not prep catching star Bryce Harper, the kid a lot people are calling the next Babe Ruth. The general rule of thumb is don’t take catcher in the first round unless he’s Joe Mauer or Matt Wieters. The MLB Draft is such a game of luck, you never know, but I doubt too many people are praising the Bucs at the moment.
