Six Penn Kitchen | Pittsburgh Restaurant Review
While the main focus of the site is to cover sports, it’s good to point out that sports aren’t everything. I encourage you to be a well rounded citizen of your community. Beside sports and business, I enjoy going to new restaurants. I figured it would be nice to do an occasional review of a Western PA / Pittsburgh area restaurant. Once again this only my sole opinion, and it’s largely based on the particular meal I order. For more independent reviews I recommend TripAdvisor and similar sites.
Six Penn Kitchen – 146 6th St Pittsburgh, PA 15222. Spring of 2009, (party of 2), total bill: $77
Appetizer:
Cauliflower gratin, truffled panko crumbs; cheese sauce -$9
(2) House salad, mixed local baby greens; dijon herb vinaigrette – $4
Entrees:
“Mac’n cheese” – $6
House smoked pork chop, house made white kim chee fried rice; hoisen demi – $22 (me)
“BLT” Risotto, bacon lardoons, tomato, radicchio, spinach; mascarpone cheese – $23
I can only speak for what I ate. Starting with the appetizer, the cauliflower was great, very unique and very tasteful. The salads were good, I had the house dressing and thought it was good. I will say I wish it was included with the meal. I did enjoy my meal, and it was probably the best pork-chop I’ve eaten. I actually can’t remember the last night I’ve order a pork-chop, but I’m glad I did. The rice with the meal was good and mixed with vegetables. The portions we’re just right also. I didn’t have the Risotto, but I can tell you it was very rich.
As for the mac n’ cheese, which is something SPK is known for. They have different flavors, but we just ordered the regular. I would say it was pretty good. I feel if you go to Six Penn, you have to order some type of Mac n’ cheese.
Atmosphere:
We sat in the second level on a Saturday night. It was busy, and it seemed like shows were going on at some of the nearby theaters. It’s not the most intimate of settings and it can be a little loud. Aesthetically the interior is very nice, but our table with a bench on one side and a chair on the other wasn’t what I would have preferred.
Additional Notes:
On a Saturday night, especially with shows I would suggest a reservation. One thing about Six Penn Kitchen is they don’t have a huge menu, however it is a seasonal menu, and we ordered from the spring menu. It’s also in walking distance of PNC Park, and if you’re looking for an after dinner drink, Oliver Twist is virtually next door.
Bottom Line:
We really enjoyed our meal at Six Penn Kitchen, and the overall food quality puts it in Pittsburgh’s top 10 in my opinion. I would suggest the restaurant to anyone going to a show, or who wanted a nice night on the town. I would make other recommendations if you’re look for a romantic atmosphere. The overall price of our dinner was a little too high in my opinion, but of course there are other menu options. As with all my restaurant reviews, this is solely my opinion, and I would not post a review of a restaurant that I wouldn’t recommend.
