PIAA moves to 6 Classifications

2009 May 21

The PIAA looks set to pass its 6 classifications for Football in the 2010 season. Everything is playing out as I mentioned in my commentary about the WPIAL and PIAA’s 6 football classifications. Which I more commonly refer to as the end of the relevancy of the WPIAL column.

Now the question will be what does the WPIAL do, well even with most school in favor of dropping out of the PIAA in football, I’ve always believe the powerhouse programs, and marquee coaches (TJ, Gateway, PR, etc) will want to win state title.

There is a new theory that the WPIAL will use a system that is similar to what a lot of rural districts use, and keep for classifications but send school to 6 classifications to the state tournament. I believe the Karns City and the Clarion County schools do this. It’s a good idea, and possibly the only option of the WPIAL has left. However giving the amount of school in play with WPIAL, It’s going to be hard to find an acceptable formula to do this. After all the WPIAL can’t figure out a way to schedule games of nearby schools, ie. Kittanning / Ford City or Burrell / Valley on alternating nights, I have my doubts about them working out this complexity.
